The Tudors

History of the Tudor Period

    John Fisher

John Fisher was Bishop of Rochester during the reign of Henry VIII. Rochester was the smallest of the dioceses. He was marked by being the only one of the bishops to choose the Pope over monarch when Henry forced a choice in 1530. This may reflect the fact that many bishops had become more state bureaucrats than ecclesiastical figures in England (and across Europe) in the proceeding period.
